Abby White has carried enough guilt and shame in her lifetime to hold her over until she retires. But she has tried to build her life and run her floral business with dignity and move on from the past.
Still she remembers her childhood sleepwalking problem and the aftermath of one night that caused her home to burn down and her sister to live with permanent scarring from the fire everyone said she started but that she does not remember. It had been so many years since she had sleepwalked that Abby thought it was behind her but the recent death of her mother has this horrible habit starting up again and Abby once again fears the darkness.. One fateful night she wakes to find herself immersed in water and fighting to get out without a snake bite or become a crocodile meal. Once Abby reaches the road she discovers that she was not the only one out that night on the lonely road – there is another person who appears to have not survived the accident and she can’t remember anything that happened.. Before she can attempt to become fully aware of the entire horror the police arrive and the mystery becomes a living nightmare when the 911 call was made the person that Abby thinks she may have killed. How is that possible and why does Abby have no memory of anything. Though she contends it is true no one seems to believe her story and everyone thinks she is hiding the truth even possibly from herself.
Dr. Jason Coble has his own living nightmare – trying to survive divorce, keep control of his former wife who is still battling alcoholism, maintain a relationship with his children and his therapy business thriving. But with a moody teenaged son who appears to have fallen into a bad crowd, a daughter who wants her parents back together and an ex-wife that is losing the battle with the bottle it is easier said than done. But when he meets Abby something starts to come alive in him again that has been dead for so long, deep desire and longing for a woman of substance. He knows that his life is really not in a good enough place to bring her into it but when opportunity knocks he has to answer because Abby is worth the risk. The more Jason knows of Abby the more he realizes that she is blaming herself for more than she should and if he is the man to help her move on from all this guilt he is going to take up the challenge and make her realize he may just be the man she has been looking for.
However it seems that there is someone out there who thinks Abby saw something that night she should not have. The more it appears that she was not responsible for the accident the more intense the attacks against her home and person become. Panic sets in for Abby because she knows this stress will only cause additional sleepwalking and she can’t risk anyone else getting hurt because of her problem. Jason is stronger than he appears and he is in it for the long haul despite Abby pushing him away and trying to convince him she is more danger than help. As the attacks escalate and the problems become more horrific Abby and Jason form a stronger bond than either could expect or hope for.
With an intertwining of family issues, life’s daily drama, just a touch of faith and a huge dose of mystery this book provides it all. There is the conviction that nothing happens by coincidence but fate brings together everyone for some purpose and it can’t all be planned out – or can it? Ms. Crandall always provides a first class book but this one in particular had me reading with the lights on and making sure the doors were locked because not everything that goes bump in the night is the house settling.
