Cassandra Sheridan is tired of waiting for life to take her by the hand, especially after she is stood up at her very own engagement ball. Instead, she decides to take life by its tossing horns and sets out to visit a close friend in Scotland, unbeknownst to her family. On the way, she encounters many difficulties, Mother Nature at her worst and a most annoying man. When the mysteriously alluring stranger is revealed to her one fateful night, she finds herself face to face with the very man she was to marry.
Devlyn St. Clair, Lord Hampstead, has little time for the attractive woman that pins herself to his side at the first sign of danger. He has a duty to fulfill to his country after all! But he soon realizes he cannot dismiss the young beauty as casually as he’d hoped. He sets out to protect Cassie, all while attempting to ensnare a dangerous villain determined to see him, and anyone he cares for, dead. Will getting close to Cassie place her in danger’s path? As treacheries far too close to home come to light, Devlyn will do all he can to ensure his family, his country and his lady’s heart can survive the coming trials.
Amazingly sensual and wickedly engaging, Melody Thomas’s sweeping tale instantly drew me in. Her characters, especially our hero and heroine, pulse with exuberant life and vivid emotion. Ms. Thomas takes a tale of espionage and it’s most detrimental deterrent—love—and breathes a fresh spin on an often-used plot. Service to the crown has never had it so good! I thoroughly enjoyed the youthful spirit that Cassie brings to Devlyn’s brooding façade. She was quite able to melt the hardened veneer of our tormented hero, in essence making him that much stronger a man and hero to the story. The writing is smooth, the story flawlessly engaging from one scene to the next and I was hard pressed to put this one down. A highly recommended read!
