Vincent Ingleton, Earl of Lonsdale has lived a live of treachery and danger. A Spy he is working silently to stop the people that are planning the escape of Napoleon from Elba. He has many enemies and very little friends. He is mistrustful of anybody and no-body really knows him. Elusive by nature he is one to fear but one you are drawn to. When Vincent visits his friend Wynmond Corby he witnesses’s his murder with his wife present. Vincent has carried a secret fascination for Diana, but being married to one of his friends he has always maintained his distance. His friend was a fellow spy and knowing that Diana’s life is in danger along with her two young children he vows to protect her at all costs.

Diana Corby is devastated when her husband is murdered in front of her. Realizing the danger she is in. She has no one to turn too. A man by the name of Deimos has been writing her vowing to make her his mistress and even providing money for her. She eagerly accepted the money and used to provide for her children. With her husband dead and out of the way, Deimos is after her, he says it’s now time for her to become his. No one knows what Deimos looks like just that he is one to fear. Vincent offers to protect her, she accepts his offer and in the middle of night they steal away to his cottage for safety under an assumed name. Neither Vincent nor Diana knew that someone is tracking their every move, killing those who cross their path. Nor do they realize that their enemy is one and the same.

A TREACHEROUS PROPOSITION is a spine tingling read, with the real presence of having to look over your shoulder while reading. Patricia Frances Rowell wrote her love story with a true suspenseful undertone that keeps the reader guessing on the identity of the enemy with the many secondary characters in the first half of the novel. The love story was well written and draws the reader in. They shared an intense attraction to each other and through the coarse of the novel they really let the barriers down between each other opening up and learning to trust. Throckmorton the brute of a bodyguard was endearing in this novel and a gentle giant when it came to Diana’s two children and it was really sweet seeing him interact with them. The villain ws quite despicable and once he came upon the scene mingling with the characters, it was really easy to figure out, holding a certain level of disappointment for me. Up to that point it was a guessing game. With no clues to give it away the villain, he was exposed with just a ominous tone that stood out in a scene. It then became a nail biter waiting for Diana and Vincent to put the pieces together and figure out what the reader knew halfway through the novel.

A TREACHEROUS PROPOSITIONwas my first novel by Patricia Frances Rowell and I enjoyed it. Her writing was descriptive and she added the right amount of danger and suspense to this emotionally tormented love story and equally tormented lead characters. I also found it of particular interest at how well the author used the moon cycles as a basis to show how much time had passed and for the superstitions that were common folklore during that era. With a quarter of the novel taking place in the cover of night and multiple disguises it added a unique element that many authors would overlook. I look forward to reading more by Patricia Frances Rowell.
